Do you want to crochet?

Have you ever wanted to crochet, or just wondered what all the fuss is about? I personally like the feeling of completing something. You put in time and effort into making something and you get a finished product that you get to say, “I made that!”. I think that is what I like the most about crochet. I have other hobbies that I enjoy- time with friends, running- and doing races, clothes. But the thing about crochet is being able to make something that I will then wear or gift to someone else for them to wear. And seeing that look on someone’s face when they get a homemade item is the best!

If you want to learn to crochet the first thing I would do would be to get a simple book of stitches. This will help you learn what the most common stitches are and what they look like once completed. There are many out there. You just need to find one that you enjoy the pictures and words make sense to you). I have a few of them. I really enjoy Complete Crochet Course, The Ultimate Reference Guide by Shannon & Jason Mullett-Bowlsby. It has great pictures and explanations. Check our your local yarn store to see if they are it. If not, you can get it from Amazon here.

Once you have a book that you enjoy I would turn to YouTube so that you can see someone else doing the stitches. I am a very visual person, so for me this works so much better than trying to just read it. Since it’s almost like reading another language that you have never seen before. Searching YouTube is a great place to start since different people teach different ways. If you feel like YouTube is overwhelming since there is so much information. A site that I like is WeCrochet. Check out their website and tutorials for a great place to learn.

I would suggest that you learn a slip knot (how to start any project), single crochet, half double crochet, and double crochet first. Those three stitches are very common. Then practice, practice and practice. The only way to learn to is to do it over and over. It helps to build that muscle memory. I liked to start with scarves. I would recommend them as they are flat, and you can do them with one continual stitch and it you can get good at them with practice.

Don’t forget to watch videos on weaving in your ends! Always my least favorite part, but also necessary!

Once you get good with those stitches and turning- it’s time to look into color changing! Once you learn the stitches, let the colors be your interesting factor of your scarf. You don’t need to get fancy at first- just practice using 2 colors in your scarf. You can make amazing scarfs using the same continual stitch and 2 colors.

Those are the steps that I would recommend for you to learn to crochet. Anyone can do it if they try! It just takes practice like everything else. And I know you will be great at it!
